Japanese warships visit Davao City after 3 years

DAVAO CITY  Two vessels from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) arrived on February 23 in Davao Gulf for a four-day port visit aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation and regional security ties between the Philippines and Japan.

Japanese destroyers JS Yamagiri (TV 3515) and JS Shiranui (DD 120) arrived in the morning of Feb. 23 and docked at Sasa Port. During their arrival in the Gulf, they were met by the Philippine Navy’s Jacinto-class patrol vessel BRP Artemio Ricarte and a fixed-wing aircraft.

The arrival of the destroyers marks the return of Japanese naval vessels after three years.

“This voyage provides our young officers with essential training and a viable opportunity to deepen friendship with the people of the Philippines. We hope our visit further strengthens the close ties between our nations,” says Capt Nose Takashi, commander of Training Division One and head of the visiting JMSDF delegation.

JS Yamagiri is an Asagiri-class destroyer; she is currently serving as a training vessel. The JS Shiranui is an Asahi-class destroyer primarily equipped for anti-submarine warfare.

The Davao visit of the two warships is part of the 2026 Overseas Training Cruise, which runs from February 13 to April 1. The training cruise with 380 personnel aims to improve trainees’ knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and international exposure, particularly for junior officers.

The visiting naval officers on Tuesday (Feb. 24) went to the old Mintal Japanese Cemetery (Mintal Public Cemetery) for a floral offering ceremony. The cemetery was the site of a pre-war burial ground for Japanese settlers in Davao. (PIA/RGA, photo PTV Davao)
