BAE Systems completes mid-life upgrade of Anzac class frigate HMAS Stuart

 

According to information published by BAE Systems on March 6, 2023, the Anzac class frigate HMAS Stuart is now back in the water after completing the Anzac Mid-life Capability Assurance Program (AMCAP).

HMAS Stuart (FFH 153) is an Anzac-class frigate of the Royal Australian Navy. This frigate was built at Williamstown in Victoria and commissioned into the RAN in 2002.

She has a displacement of 3,600 tonnes at full load and measures 118 meters in length and 15 meters in width, with a draught of 4 meters. The ship is powered by a General Electric LM 2500 gas turbine providing 30,000 horsepower, along with two MTU 12v 1163 TB83 diesel engines providing 8,840 horsepower. Its top speed is 27 knots, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 18 knots. The frigate carries a crew of approximately 170 sailors.

HMAS Stuart is equipped with a range of sensors and processing systems, including a Thomson Sintra Spherion B Mod 5 hull-mounted sonar for active search and attack, a Raytheon AN/SPS-49(V)8 ANZ air search radar, a CelsiusTech 9LV 453 TIR (Ericsson Tx/Rx) surface search radar, and an Atlas Elektronik 9600 ARPA navigation system.

Electronic warfare and decoy systems include Racal modified Sceptre A and Telefunken PST-1720 Telegon 10 ESM interceptors, and G & D Aircraft SRBOC Mk 36 Mod 1 decoy launchers.

The ship's armament includes a 5 inch/54 (127mm) Mk 45 Mod 2 gun, various machine guns and small arms, 2 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, a Mk 41 Mod 5 VLS for Sea Sparrow and Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles, and 2 triple 324 mm Mk 32 Mod 5 torpedo tubes.

The frigate is also equipped with a CelsiusTech 9LV 453 combat data system and an optronic director for weapons control. She can carry one Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopter.
