Oshkosh Flaunts Upgraded Tactical Vehicle After Losing $8.7B US Army Deal

Oshkosh Defense will showcase its upgraded 4-door Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2023 in the United Arab Emirates.

The announcement comes after the American firm lost an $8.7 billion recompete contract to supply the US Army with 20,000 JLTVs.

According to Oshkosh, the vehicle will be equipped with an Objective Gunner Protection Kit (OGPK), an integrated armor and ballistic glass turret to protect tactical vehicle gunners from enemy fire.

“We are excited to be back at IDEX this week discussing our full portfolio of tactical wheeled vehicles,” company vice president John Lazar said.

“Oshkosh is committed to supporting the United Arab Emirates and our regional allied and coalition partners by building world-class tactical wheeled vehicles and mobility systems that strengthen operational and tactical capabilities.”

Major Loss

In 2015, Oshkosh Defense was selected by the US Army to build more than 16,000 JLTVs under a $6.7-billion contract.

Since the service owns the rights to the vehicle’s data package, it opened the competition again to determine if other firms could offer a lower price.

Newcomer AM General won the recompete contract, promising to enhance the JLTVs’ corrosion protection and improve their fuel efficiency.

“The JLTV follow-on contract strategy was designed to provide a fair and competitive environment, while ensuring the Army obtained a premier manufacturer that delivers the highest quality, most capable, and affordable tactical vehicle in the world,” the US Army said in a statement.
