HMS VICTORIOUS leaving HMNB Portsmouth for sea trials after an 8 year refit in which she was almost rebuilt and significantly upgraded since her initial launch in 1939. She would serve until 1968 when she was deleted early as part of defence cuts

Type 984 radar (Searchlight)Type 984 was a Royal Navy radar system introduced in the mid-1950s, designed by the Admiralty Signals Research Establishment. Type 984 was a 3D S band system used for both ground controlled interception (GCI) and as a secondary early warning system. It was the most sophisticated naval radar of its era.

  1. The photo of Victorious she’s her with Buccaneer S1s at the fore end of the flight deck - Not sea trials in 1958!!! More like 1961 when fully operational.

  3. That date came from a previous comment so thanks for the correction. I remember Victorious arriving in Singapore early 60's and she was reputed to have had a recent refit. Feel free to join our site and make any contributions. I was New Zealand navy and trained as a GI and Whale Island and enjoyed my stay in UK.
