British sailors are given their rum ration at the Royal Navy barracks. Portsmouth. England. 1933


For anyone thinking that was a lot of grog (since the Junior Ranks didn't get neat rum) for one person, here's some context from wiki:

Each mess had a "Rum Bosun" who would collect the rum in a metal container called a " fanny " from the Supply rating (Jack Dusty) responsible for measuring out the right number of tots for each mess, supervised by the Officer of the Day (OOD) and a member of the Regulating branch who, using the S71 Victualling Daily State Book, would call out the number of entitled ratings in each mess (so, for example, if the Regulator called " 28 tots " for a mess the Jack Dusty would calculate, by mental arithmetic, that 28 tots at 3/8 pint per tot equalled 10 1
