The Royal Navy flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth has welcomed a new captain.

Captain Ian Feasey takes over from Captain Angus Essenhigh who took up the post in January 2020.

On the aircraft carrier's official Twitter account, the ship said: "We say goodbye and a huge thank you to Capt Angus Essenhigh OBE RN.

"Welcome to Capt Ian Feasey RN. We look forward to sailing under your command."

Capt Feasey's appointment coincides with the £3.3bn ship's deployment on the UK-led Carrier Strike Group mission.

The formation is currently in the Indo-Pacific region as part of its 28-week deployment, covering 26,000 nautical miles.

HMS Queen Elizabeth recently docked in Guam and is set to take part in training with the New Zealand Defence Force.

Commander UK Carrier Strike Group, Commodore Steve Moorhouse, paid tribute to Capt Essenhigh, who replaced him as HMS Queen Elizabeth captain when he was promoted to his current role last year.

He wrote on Twitter: "Thank you, Angus, for everything you have done as Captain of the Fleet Flag Ship."

Cdre Moorhouse also welcomed the ship's new captain, tweeting: "Capt Feasey, welcome to #CSG21 – we've both come a long way since @HMSSEVERN!!"

Capt Feasey previously served as captain of Type 23 frigate HMS Monmouth and is HMS Queen Elizabeth's fifth captain.

The aircraft carrier did not say what Capt Essenhigh's next step was.

He had earlier served as Commanding Officer of Type 45 destroyer HMS Daring and Ice Patrol Ship HMS Protector.
