HII to build extra US Navy Arleigh Burke-class Flight III destroyer

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has been contracted to build an additional Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) Flight III destroyer.

The contract, worth $936m, has been awarded by the US Navy.

Ingalls Shipbuilding president Brian Cuccias said: “We take great pride in the craftsmanship of our shipbuilders, and in the capabilities of our world-class shipyard.

“This contract award provides great momentum for Ingalls and our more than 600 suppliers, in nearly 40 states, as we enter the second half of the year.

“We continue to focus on high performance and providing the greatest value possible to our customers.”

In 2018, Ingalls won a $5.1bn fixed-price incentive, multiyear contract. Under the contract, the shipbuilding division is building six Arleigh Burke-class Flight III destroyers for the US Navy.

Ingalls has delivered 32 guided missile destroyers to the navy to date. Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

The vessels currently being built are the Frank E Petersen Jr (DDG 121), Lenah H Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123), Jack H Lucas (DDG 125), and Ted Stevens (DDG 128).

In April this year, Ingalls delivered Delbert D Black (DDG 119) to the US Navy.

The multi-mission Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are designed to perform diverse missions, including peacetime presence, crisis management, sea control, and power projection.

Equipped with integrated defensive weapons, the vessels can simultaneously conduct air, surface and subsurface warfare.

In March this year, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (BIW) shipyard officially began building the future USS Louis H Wilson Jr (DDG 126).

It is the first Arleigh Burke-class destroyer built in the Flight III configuration at the shipyard.
