Royal Australian Air Force originally shared:
Night flying at Williamtown and Richmond
What: Night flying will be occurring at RAAF Base Williamtown, RAAF Base Richmond and surrounding suburbs as well as night diverts into Richmond by F/A-18 Hornet aircraft
When: 6:00-9:00pm – Monday to Thursday, 27-30 July.
Where: RAAF Base Williamtown and surrounding suburbs; RAAF Base Richmond and surrounding suburbs.
Background:
Up to six F/A-18 aircraft from Number 2 Operational Conversion Unit (2OCU) will conduct night flying operations as part of an operational conversion course. The jets will take off from Williamtown at approximately 6:00pm and conduct diversion training into RAAF Base Richmond, before returning to RAAF Base Williamtown at approximately 9:00pm.
The ability to land at alternate airfields is an essential part of pilot training on the Hornet aircraft. Richmond is the primary divert airfield for RAAF Base Williamtown.
This training will also include an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach, which assists pilots to land at night or in poor weather conditions.
Residents should note that these dates and times are subject to change.
Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military activity, and Air Force appreciates the ongoing support of the Port Stephens and Hawkesbury communities during these training activities.
