Images have been posted online of two Chinese fleet auxiliaries being fitted out at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI). One is the fifth Type 903/Fuchi class underway replenishment ship. The first two Type 903s were commissioned in 2004, with a further two 23,000-tonne Type 903As were commissioned in 2013.
The second ship being fitted out appears to be variant of the 15,000-tonne Type 904A/Danyao class. The first of these, Fuxianhu (888), was completed in 2007. In 2012 Chinese military media reported that Fuxianhu had been purpose built for material replenishment and troop rotation of the garrisons in the Spratly Islands, and that between 2009 and 2012 it completed more than 10 rotations and resupply.
Both Fuxianhu and the new ship are equipped with two pairs of large davits either side for deploying boats to transport people and stores ashore. They are not conventional underway replenishment ships and it therefore seems likely that the new ship is being built for same operational role in the shallow waters around the reefs and islands of the South China Sea (SCS). This would also be consistent with the current major expansion of facilities in the Spratly Islands.
