Japanese Navy spotted off the Isle of Wight
JAPANESE warships have been spotted off the Isle of Wight.
The three ships belong to the Japanese Maritime Defence Force Training Squadron and have been visiting Portsmouth as part of a five month global deployment, according to a Royal Navy spokesman.
The ships — JDS Kashima, JDS Shirayuki and JDS Isoyuki — could be spotted off the north east coast of the Island, in the Spithead area between Ryde and Portsmouth as they made their way towards Southsea yesterday (Sunday).
They arrived at the naval base today (Monday), when JDS Kashima fired a 21-gun salute. The saluting gun at Fort Blockhouse, Gosport, responded with its own a 21-gun salute.
Rear Admiral Fumiyuki Kitagawa said: "Japan and Great Britain have a history going back hundreds of years. The Royal Navy was the model for the foundation of the Japanese Navy so we are very pleased to be here."
The public can climb on board JDS Isoyuki, which is opening her gangway free of charge to visitors on Wednesday, between 10am and 4pm.
