Joint Support Ship ‘HNLMS Karel Doorman’ departed Galati, Romania, on July 22nd, and headed to the last stage of construction execution in the Netherlands. It is expected that the vessel will reach Vlissingen in 3 weeks.
It has been two and a half years since the keel was laid and the works on the vessel started in Damen Shipyards Galati. Having in mind the size of the project this meant a tight schedule. The vessel measures 205 m in length and 30 m in breadth, with a total displacement of 28,000 tones, accommodating 175 crew members and up to 125 non-listed persons.
Alewijnse Marine Galati signed up to supply and install the cabling and cabling related steelwork, along with installation and connection of the electrical equipment and “loose” equipment. It resulted in an estimated total of 600,000 m of cable (or 25,000 pieces of cable).
AMG took the challenge with eagerness and managed to pull 490k metres of cable onboard and perform 25,216 connections. The teams behind the numbers, one for steelwork, one for installation works and one for work preparation, will reach an estimated 120 persons onboard in the peak of the activities.
Because the vessel construction required strict quality enforcing, the company obtained separate certifications for welders, in addition to copper and fiber optic network certification for their installation teams.
“We would like to thank Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) for giving us the opportunity of being involved in the building of the largest ship to serve in the Royal Netherlands Navy and wish all the teams involved in the last stage of execution good luck with their work”, says Mr. Pieter Smit, General Manager of AMG.
