Israel Navy Recieves New Submarine INS Rahav

The Navy of Israel has received a new submarine, INS Rahav, in an official ceremony held yesterday in Kiel, Germany, according to defensenews.com.

The Dolphin-Class submarine, INS Rahav, is Israel’s fifth submarine of the class.

The Dolphin-class is a diesel-electric submarine developed and constructed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW), Germany for the Israeli Navy.

The Dolphin-class boats are considered among the most sophisticated and capable conventionally powered submarines in the world.

INS Rahav is to arrive in Israel next year after completion of sea trials and weapon system installation.

The submarine’s precursor, the fourth Dolphin-class submarine, the INS Tanin, was launched in Germany a year ago and is expected to join the Israeli Navy in the next few months.

Israel has already signed a deal for the sixth submarine from the series. The new submarine is not expected to go into service until the end of the decade.
