Why do I teach? Because I love learning and I see myself as a lead learner in my class.

I made the video, see left, of my Myross Bush school (Invercargill) class last term to show parents what we get up to in a typical day.

School has changed so much since I was there in the 1980s, and I think you can see this in the timelapse footage (taken between 8.45am and 3.30pm).

I've been teaching for seven years.

I trained later in my career, after being a youth worker and realising the passion I had for helping children reach their potential and light that spark for learning (like I have).

The biggest challenge is meeting everyone's expectations - the students, the parents, the Ministry and the wider community.

We all have very determined views on how learning should happen and equally determined views on what education is for.

When you combine everyone's unique experiences of school, and life in general, into an intense environment of 30 children and their combined families, it's a rewarding but also challenging thing.

Would I do anything else? For sure, but I choose to teach and still believe that we can make a difference.

I hope I'll always be trying to master new skills and try new things. That's what I hope to pass on to my students; being a life-long learner.
