South Korean Navy's Ships Visit Vladivostok

Ships of the South Korean Navy’s training cruise unit called at Vladivostok on Sept 16.

For 130 South Korean naval cadets, Vladivostok is the first out of 11 foreign ports in 10 countries to be visited during the cruise.

It is the eighth visit of Korean midshipmen to Vladivostok; the first was paid in 1996. This time, they arrived on destroyer Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin and a supply ship.

Purpose of the visit is strengthening of friendly relations between Russian and South Korean navies.

During the call at Russia’s Pacific Fleet (PF) main base, the guests had various protocol activities, tours around Vladivostok places of interest including visit to the Far East Federal University and meeting with Korean diaspora.

After the solemn meeting ceremony, the cruise commander met with PF Deputy Commander RADM Andrei Ryabukhin.

In the evening Sept 16, the guests arranged onboard banquettes for PF commanding staff and Korean diaspora.

On Monday, Russian and Korean high-ranking officers laid wreaths at the Pacific Fleet Battle Glory Memorial. Korean cadets played a friendly soccer game with their Russian colleagues.

The training cruise unit has a 59-year long eventful history; it goes back to 1954. Traveling across the globe, ships of the unit have visited 470 ports and covered about 1.56 millions of kilometers. This is enough to sail around the world 34 times.

The visit of South Korean ships finished on Sept 17, the day ahead of schedule due to upcoming typhoon. The ships left Vladivostok after noon and headed for San Francisco.
