Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received a contract for modernisation period planning of the US Navy’s first two Zumwalt-class guided-missile destroyers.
The estimated value of this cost-plus-fixed-fee contract is approximately $10.5m.
According to a US Department of Defense (DoD) announcement, the advanced modernisation period planning contract is being managed by the Naval Sea Systems Command.
Related work on the two destroyers, USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) and Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001), will be carried out at HII Ingalls Shipbuilding’s facility in Pascagoula, Mississippi, US.
The company will complete the associated work by December this year.
According to HII, the company has invested around $1bn to support facility, infrastructure and toolsets at its Ingalls Shipbuilding division.
This investment has allowed the Ingalls’ workers and shipbuilders to further improve the product flow and maintain process efficiency to enhance product quality.
HII Ingalls Shipbuilding president Kari Wilkinson said: “Ingalls is honoured to have been selected to deliver this new capability with our Navy and industry partners.
“Our shipbuilders stand ready to do what is necessary to enable our fleet in the protection of peace around the world.”
The US Navy’s Zumwalt-class multi-mission destroyer fleet has a stealth design and features a wide range of advanced warfighting technology and weaponry.
It is equipped with a wave-piercing tumblehome hull and an electric propulsion system.
The vessels of this class are deployed to undertake various missions, including power projection, deterrence, sea control and command-and-control operations.
The first Zumwalt-class ship, DDG 1000, was delivered in April 2020.
Ingalls is also providing combat systems availability for the third Zumwalt-class destroyer, named Lyndon B Johnson (DDG 1002). The ship arrived in Pascagoula in January 2022 to undergo the related work.
